Rebecca Schaeffer & United 232...20 Years Ago
This past weekend, two tragic events from 20 years ago...July 18, 1989...21-year-old actress Rebecca Schaeffer from the sitcom My Sister Sam and movie Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills was murdered by then-19-year-old Robert John Bardo. Bardo was an obsessed fan who stalked Schaeffer for three years. He shot her at point-blank range at the door of her apartment building. Bardo was later arrested and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
July 19, 1989...United Airlines flight 232 was a scheduled flight from the now-disestablished Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, only to stopover at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois and make a final stop at Philadelphia International Airport. The Douglas DC-10 aircraft suffered an uncontained failure of number 2 engine which destroyed all three of the aircraft's hydraulic systems. Due to the lost of control other than the thrust levers for the two remaining engines, UA 232 broke up during an emergency landing on the runway at Sioux City, Iowa. Of 285 passengers, 112 perished as one of the 11 crew members.
